Shannon Sharpe and the Modern-Day Sex Tape
Pro Football Hall of Fame tight end and Super Bowl champion Shannon Sharpe, who currently hosts ESPN's First Take, had his Instagram account hacked, according to the first reports this week. "Watch out for my @ShannonSharpe84. My team and I are working hard to discover why Instagram was hacked this morning. Sharpe stated in a post, "- UNC."
In particular, what was audible but not visible during Sharpe's Instagram Live was what seemed to be a darkened phone screen with a woman in the middle of some sexual activity, lying face down.
The voice of a man is heard mentioning a woman by name and making a pretty overt sexual proposal.
Sharpe acknowledges that he unintentionally shared a few inappropriate instances with his 3.2 million followers.
Too many to name
Unintentionally posting a picture or video is one thing, but getting hacked is another.
Cybercriminals have undoubtedly been busy stealing, leaking, and posting private documents during and after the well-known and gigantic # CelebGate affair, as evidenced by this long list of celebrities hacked in the past ten years. Rihanna, Kristen Stewart, Dakota Johnson, Ariana Grande, Ariel Winter, and many more have all been impacted by this theft after discovering the all too painful truth that a net cloud account provides little security for one's most sensitive images and videos.
Since the legislation is vague about what the media can and cannot do with content released by other sources for public consumption, it appears that it is difficult to shut down the revenge porn websites that publish these images and films.
Before the cloud and the post, there was tape.
Tommy Lee and Pamela Anderson were canoodling across boat decks and bedrooms. Kim Kardashian was in bed with her then-boyfriend Ray J when she was considerably younger. Rob Lowe's sex tape, which he has since claimed helped him get sober from the commotion he endured over it, is perhaps one of the oldest and most well-known examples, along with Paris Hilton and Rick Salomon (who sold the tape himself).
In the past, the only way to gain insight into the private lives of Hollywood celebrities was to listen to a leaked sex tape.
Or those that are no longer so royal.
Dustin Diamond, star of "Saved By The Bell," revealed a sex tape in 2006, which was quite a few years after the flurry of recordings going public. However, he has now asserted that he fabricated the entire situation. D.D. used a body double to earn millions from the tape sale and later edited his face in.
There has always been speculation in contemporary culture over which of those above was purposefully leaked and which others had been stolen. It's shocking what can currently be achieved with deepfakes.
A parting shot at sexual infamy
Naturally, the triple x website, The Porn Dude, offered $100,000 to have Shannon Sharpe "score the ultimate BBC touchdown on our set," as is customary with this type of here-today-gone-tomorrow-for-some-other-news-story.
The amount of money that could be offered to a Magnesium-flash celebrity like Haley Welch or a Sharpe to pose for even a more subdued publication like Playboy seems unlimited. The news will continue to be posted if there is flesh, naughty sounds, or the promise of either.
